All About Quartz: April Birthstone

Hello April babies! This blog is all about you and your months birthstone. Of course, the actual birthstone for April is diamond, but we chose to use clear quartz as a more budget friendly alternative. Quartz also happens to be one of the main stones that we feature in this year’s Spring/Summer collection. We chose to use quartz very prevalently throughout this collection to offset the many-colored gems that are present in the designs. It’s a fresh new take on Spring and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you! We thought we’d take this opportunity to go more in depth into the history and meaning behind this fascinating gemstone. Ordinary yet extraordinary, colorful and clear, Quartz crystals are the most common and abundant in the world, comprising the largest and most diverse family in the mineral kingdom. Throughout history, Clear Quartz has been valued by nearly every civilization as far back as Atlantis and Lemuria, where the sun's power was believed to be harnessed through crystals as a source of solar energy refraction. They, along with Native American Indians, African tribes, ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Romans, Scots and countless other cultures used Clear Quartz in diagnostic healing, meditations and spiritual development, as religious objects and in funerary rites, and to dispel evil and magical enchantments. The term “quartz” comes from the Greek word for “ice” because the ancient philosophers believed that the transparent stone was a form of permanent ice, so cold, it kept from thawing. Every ancient culture had a different meaning for clear quartz. In Japan, clear quartz signified a “perfect jewel” because they believed it symbolized space, purity and patience. Indigenous North American cultures thought of the stone as a sentient being and would gift it food as well as other offerings as a sign of respect. To cultures in Central and South America, quartz represented a vessel. They believed that the spirits of their ancestors were held in clear quartz like an urn for spirits. They carved the clear quartz stone into the shape of a human skull and used it as a religious talisman. In Scotland and Ireland, quartz crystals were carved into spheres. They believed clear quartz had the metaphysical ability to heal ailments in their cattle. Today, different metaphysical attributes are given to the stone. While quartz can connect with and aid all chakras, giving it a reputation as a master healer, it is especially helpful for activating the crown chakra. This chakra controls how we think about and perceive situations. Quartz can help open the mind and elevate negative perspectives to a more enlightened point of view. Its metaphysical purposes are vast, from helping to expand consciousness to facilitating open communication and stimulating the chakras. For those needing clarity of mind, clear quartz will eliminate energy blockages and allow energy to flow smoothly throughout the body. With that being said, you can see why we chose this magnificent stone to be the star of our new Spring/Summer collection.
